How to setup Quality Control Lab at Project

Quality Control Lab at any construction project is setup base on the requirement of tests to be conducted on site.
For some tests, setup required can cost huge amount and also the skilled persons required for doing a job - example - Setting universal testing machine for testing physical properties of steel. - if i get this done from a third party as low cost compare to setup - i will prefer to get that test done from the third party laboratory.

For some tests, setup cost is low / negligible, does not require much of skills and need to be preform frequently on daily or weekly basis - Example - Sieve analysis of aggregates, Checking silt content in sand, compressive strength testing of concrete - i will prefer to get that test done in Project Quality Lab as the quantum of testing is huge and doing the test in third party lab may not give the result on time where you need to take decision immediately by performing tests.

To setup a laboratory at construction project one should know following;
1. Specification laid for testing of materials and its frequencies.
2. A Quality engineer can make a list of equipment's required base on previous experience and additional requirement for a project.
3. Requirement of staff for performing those test including workmen.

Once you have a data, you can plan for setting up of your quality lab at project.
Base on the number of equipment's required you can make a layout plan for quality lab with dimensions and locations of equipment in lab.
Can provide requirement of equipment's for procurement.
Raise the requirement of staff and workmen for effective working of quality lab.

Setting up a Quality lab at Project is not a job of Junior or the person who does not have any knowledge about it and do not have project specific requirement known to him.
In absence of knowledge, it might happen that a wrong requirement is raised and procured a equipment which never got used at a project.

Quality and Safety are different streams which can not be clubbed together at junior level as both look at the project in different aspects.

In General, Quality Lab setup consist of following equipment's;

Cube Testing Machine
Sieve set for Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates.
Measuring Cylinders.
Cube Moulds
1 or 1/2 Bag concrete mixer.
Trays of various sizes.
Vicat Aparatus
Pycnometer Bottles.
Weighting Scales
Hot Oven
Hot Pan
Flakiness Index Apparatus
Elongation Index Apparatus
Water Absorption test bucket.
Thermometer
Moisture Meter
pH Meter
Gauges
and there is lot more which can be added in a list provided, those equipment's are really required and used at construction project.

Sir im asking generally. Present im not in any qc job.

You should have basic purpose, necessity and any specific project requirements for setting up of a QC Laboratory.
Are you looking to set-up for a permanent or any temporary facility until the contract period...?

If you are looking for a big Highway project; then you need to set-up a field QC Lab at job site which is quite helpful consisting of Field testing Equipments + Common Soil & Aggregates testing things + Asphaltic Concrete Testing Equipments...
In case if you are looking to catering for Ready Mixed Concrete Suppliers, then it is different proposition....you can have Materials Testing Equipments for Concrete, Aggregates, Cement testing Instruments
In case if you are serving for major Earthworks and or dam construction projects; you should have Geotechnical Laboratory Instruments along with field QC testing Equipments.

Overall for any Laboratory as mentioned above, you should have few nos of highly skilled Laboratory Technicians (both filed & lab) along with one experienced Lab Engineer/ Manager to look after the whole affairs of QC testing works. Once you set-up, you can slowly and gradually in a phased manner to go for NABL accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025 Standards.
