Designing of highway drainage system

What is highway drainage?
The main objective of highway drainage is to ensure that both surface and sub surface water are removed from the highway to avoid the highway from being adversely affected by it. Water standing on the carriageway is a danger to high-speed traffic due to hydro-planing. It is even more dangerous if it freezes. The water seeping into the pavement and sub-grade leads t o the pavement and sub-grade leads to the development of soft spots which results
in the break-up of the surfacing and the need for expensive maintenance work.
The wash-out of a pipe culvert across a highway is just as much a hindrance to traffic as the collapse of a large bridge. It can therefore be said with total justification that proper drainage design is an essential and integral part of economical highway design. It should not only be considered during the highway design but also during the location of the highway itself.
The design of the drainage facility should not adversely affect the adjacent property. It should aim at providing a disposal system commensurate with the cost and importance of the highway.
Where a river crossing is involved, a culvert or a bridge structure can be designed. In that case, the basic hydrological study and hydraulic analysis have to be carried out. The structural design of such structures will be carried out by the structural engineer while the highway engineer is concerned with the selection of the type of structure and its location.
In designing the drainage facility consideration should be made on the level of maintenance and the method of maintenance.
Highway drainage consideration can be divided consideration can be divided into subsurface moisture control and surface drainage. Subsurface moisture control is concerned with the flow of water within soils, while surface drainage is concerned with the measures taken to control the movement of water over the ground on and adjacent to the highway.
The main objective being to direct this water to suitable disposal points without any detrimental effect to the roadway.
