A lintel is a beam placed across the openings like doors, windows, or any opening over which masonry etc is needed to be placed in buildings. The main function of the lintel is to take loads coming from above wall and transfer its load to the side walls.

Generally, the width of the lintel beam is equal to the width of the wall over which it's needed to be erected.

The height is decided by the amount of load coming onto it and hence could change based on the amount of load upon it. Lintels could be cast in concrete/steel etc. A minimum overhang or bearing should be at least 150mm. Concrete grade minimum to be M:20 and above. Deshuttering time to be adhered to as per relevant IS codes which many times is not followed resulting in failure of lintel beams.
