Work procedure for Cutting Bending and Fixing of Reinforcement Steel Bars

Work procedure for Cutting Bending and Fixing of Reinforcement Steel Bars

SCOPE / PURPOSE
This procedure is prepared for bending & placement of reinforcement bars as per relevant drawings & specifications. All reinforcement work shall be shall be executed in conformity with the drawings supplied and instructions given by the consultants and shall be generally be carried out in accordance with relevant Indian standard specifications (IS 2502).

CODES / SPECIFICATION - IS 1786 & IS 2502

RESPONSIBILITY
Responsibilities of all concerned is clearly mentioned with respect to overall administration and implementation in the approved Organogram.

MATERIALS TO BE USED
Steel used in the works shall be a high yield strength deformed steel bar conforming to IS 1786-1985(latest revision) manufactured by those agencies having BIS license. Any other steel specified for reinforcement work shall confirm in every respect to the latest relevant Indian Standard specifications.

SAFETY REQUIREMENT
  • Cutting of reinforcement bars shall be supervised by qualified supervisor.
  • Proper precautions shall be taken while cutting using gloves and goggles.
  • Safety shoes shall be worn while handling and transportation.
  • All worker should wear required PPE’s (safety helmet, shoes, safety belts)

DEPLOYMENT OF EQUIPMENT
Bar shearing machine capable of 36 mm diameter reinforcement steel bars

DEPLOYMENT OF MANPOWER
As per the requirement and the direction of project manager.

IMPLEMENTATION

Bending & Cutting:
  • Bending of reinforcement steel bars requires adequate supervision, skilled workmanship and efficient equipment (IS: 2502). Personnel duly qualified shall be employed for cutting and bending operations.
  • The dimension of bends shall be so given that a minimum amount of calculation is necessary for marking of bars. The dimensioning procedure shall be used as per drawings and in absence of dimension on drawings, IS: 2502 shall be referred for bending. Dimensions shown in the bar bending schedule shall be checked before cutting the bars.
  • Bending of bars shall be done in cold conditions only and no heating is permitted on bars. Load shall be applied gradually. Bar once bent shall not be reworked for modification etc. without the approval of the Engineer-in-charge.
  • Bars having cracks or splits on the bends shall be rejected.
  • After bending of bars, they shall be properly tagged according to drawing number and bar mark for easy identification.
  • In HYSD bars untwisted portion shall be cut and removed to a distance of 150 mm on both sides.
Spacing, Supporting and Cleaning:
  • All reinforcement shall be placed and maintained in the positions shown on the drawings. 18 swg G.I wire shall be used as binding wire. All bars crossing one another shall be bound with this wire twisted tight to make the skeleton on network rigid. Bars must be cleaned with dry gunny bags if they are coated lightly with rust or other impurities. Required number of MS chairs & spacer bars shall be used in order to ensure accurate positioning of reinforcement.
  • Place the reinforcement as per “Good for construction” drawings ensuring the following aspects properly.
  • Type & size of bar.
  • Number of bars.
  • Location of bends, cranks, hooks.
  • Location and length of laps, splices
  • Curtailment of bars.
  • In two-way reinforcement, check the direction of reinforcement in various layers.
  • Adequate number of chairs, spacer bars and cover blocks.
  • Size of cover blocks.
  • Dowels / Development length.
Cover to reinforcement:
All cover blocks shall be of cement mortar (1:2). The minimum cover to be provided shall be in accordance with the provisions in the structural drawings. Unless specified otherwise, actual concrete cover should not deviate from the required nominal cover by +10 mm & -0 mm. Alternately cover blocks of materials like PVC, Micro-concrete will be permitted after approval from Project Manager.

Lapping & Welding:
As and when necessary welded laps shall be provided as specified by the Project Manager, and shall be in accordance with IS code 2571 requirements. Where ever specified all welding shall be carried out in accordance with IS 2571 and only qualified welders shall be permitted to carry out welding.

Non- conformance and corrective action:
Reinforcement steels, which do not conform to the specification shall be properly tagged, segregated out and recorded in order to prevent for inadvertent use. All such defective and rejected items shall be physically separated from the usable item.In case, any of these items are proposed to be used in works, the same shall be recorded in the form of design concession request and forwarded to the Project Manager who will forward the same to the designer for review and after his acceptance shall be recorded in “as built condition’. The identification of significant conditions adverse to quality, the cases and corrective action shall be reported to appropriate level of management.

Transportation & placing:
HYSD bars will be transported from the fabrication yard by trailers. While transporting, care will be taken for ensuring that the bars do not suffer any damage and are safely handled. HYSD bars will be properly stacked and identification and trace ability should be properly ensured in the places of work and any further checks as desired could be ensured there.
