There has been a lot of recent research regarding the benefits of using tack coats between hot mix asphalt lifts and how it helps extend the lifespan of HMA overlays. We used to take these applications for granted, but that is no longer case anymore.

This paving season, our jurisdiction is actually introducing a new specification requiring longitudinal pavement joints to be sealed prior to subsequent lifts being installed (HERE'S A LINK): http://www.idot.illinois.gov/Assets...-Environment/BDE-Special-Provisions/80398.pdf
