Required Assistant Professors (Two Posts) for JTSDS

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) which was established in 1936 is a Deemed University fully funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC), Government of India. TISS offers over 50 Masters' Degree Programmes from in a range of socially relevant inter-disciplinary areas of Social Work, Social Sciences, Health, Management, Labour Studies, Habitat Studies and Rural Development from its Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad Campuses. It has a strong M.Phil./Ph.D. Programme. A high degree of freedom and autonomy shape the positive work ethos and creativity in the Institute. The Jamsetji Tata School of Disaster Studies (JTSDS) of the Institute requires one position of Assistant Professor for it centres located with in it to be filled in on contract basis.

Centre for Disaster Management or Centre for Disasters and Development: (Assistant Professor One post)
The two Centres for Disaster Management strives for excellence in education and focuses on advancement in knowledge in Disaster Studies and promotion of positive practices in the broad domain of disaster management. The Centres works on diverse themes such as PDNA, eco-system management, habitat planning, psycho-social care, humanitarian logistics, public health and so on.
  • The incumbent would also be required to teach at the Masters' and MPhil programmes in Disaster Management offered by the School, or other online programes based on needs of the School. Besides teaching, ability to guide MPhil and Docoral students will be an assest.The job also requires familiarity with working in multidisciplinary teams and willingness to perform routine administartive duties in an academic system. The School has a tradition of engaging in outreach work pre and post disasters and the incumbent should be able to lead student teams to disaster sites or work on hazard, risk and vulnerability analysis within the broad domain of disaster studies.
  • Selected candidate will be expected to support the ongoing work of the Centres for Disaster Management. The Centre is moving rapidly towards offering its own Masters programme and the incumbent would be expected to contribute towards evolving the new curriculum. The selected candidate would be required to undertake regular enrichment of ongoing course content to ensure that the Centre and its programmes and courses are world class, comparable to global quality standards.

  • Good academic record with at least 55% of the marks or an equivalent grade of 'B' in the 7 point scale with letter grades O,A,B,C,D,E and F at the Master’s Degree (or equivalent) level from an Indian University, or an equivalent degree from an acredited foreign university. A relaxation of 5% will be provided from 55% to 50% of the marks at the Master’s level for the SC/ST/Differentially-abled category candidates, and to the Ph. D. Degree holders who have passed their Master’s Degree prior to 19th September 1991.
  • Besides fulfilling the above qualifications, the candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC, CSIR or similar test accredited by the UGC like SLET/SET. Candidates, who are, or have been awarded a Ph. D. Degree in accordance with the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph. D. Degree) Regulations, 2009, shall be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professor in Universities/ Colleges/Institutions.

Specific Requirements:
An academic background in Disaster Management and those possessing relevant publications would be preferred. The incumbent would require to be aware of global trends in Disaster Management. Proven capacities to write high quality research proposals to secure national and international funding will be an assest. The incumbent should posses leadership qualities, excellent communication skills, research and academic skills and ability for team work.

Preference will be given to candidates with 65% and above at Master's level or those with Ph. D. and research/ teaching experience.

(e) since applications received may be short listed, merely possessing the prescribed qualifications and the requisite experience shall not entitle a person to be called for written test, making a presentation and interview
(f) the Institute reserves the right to restrict the candidates to a reasonable number on the basis of qualification and experience higher than the minimum prescribed as decided by the duly constituted Screening Committee
(g) No queries or correspondence regarding issue of call letter for interview / selection of candidates for the post will be entertained at any stage and canvassing in any form is strictly prohibited and will lead to the candidate being debarred from consideration for the post.
(h) Candidate under employment must bring ‘No Objection Certificate’ from their employer to appear for presentation/ interview.
(i) No TA / DA is payable for appearing for the interview
