Dear
Does not know the exact design criteria.
But basically we provide intermediate vertical stiffeners to prevent bulking of web due to diagonal compression stresses developed due to shear force in web plate.
Thanks for asking such question this is helping in refreshing my design knowledge which was left during college days @ 30 years back.
