Why and where the lintel beams are used

What is Lintel beam?
A lintel is a type of beam which support the above wall when openings like doors, windows etc.The main function of the lintel is to take loads coming from above wall and transfer the same toits load to the side walls.

Types of Lintel Beams:
Lintels are classified into the following types according to the materials of their construction:
  • Timber lintel
  • Stone lintel
  • Reinforced concrete lintel
  • Brick lintel
  • Reinforced brick lintel
  • Steel lintel
Purpose of using Lintel Beams:
  1. To support the walls above the openings like doors, windows etc.
  2. To provide a safeguard of the windows and doors.
  3. To withstand the imposed loads coming from above bricks or block including the roofing members.
  4. To transfer its load to the side walls.
  5. Sometimes lintels are used as architectural aesthetic

Lintel beam provide at 2.1 meter height or above window or doors openings

Lintel is provided just above the opening.

If the beam is running directly on top of opening and there is no need to cunstruct wall above, then lintel is not required.

Normally all opening top are at same level from asthetic point of view, as well as avoiding mistakes during construction.

The door opening roughly is of 7 feet in height i.e.- 2.1 meter. It may be more than it.
