Why do Americans seem to favor 3" drain pipes rather than the 100mm (4") ones used in the UK?

Why do Americans seem to favor 3" drain pipes rather than the 100mm (4") ones used in the UK? Blockages must surely be more frequent. My home being Victorian has 6" drain pipes. In over 150 years they have never given a problem!
