Determination of fineness of Cement
Ref : IS 4031- (Part I)Purpose : To Determine the fineness of cement
Significance : The fineness of cement has an important bearing on the rate of hydration and hence and rate of gain of strength and rate of evaluation of heat. Finer cement offers a greater surface area for hydration and hence the faster and grater the development of strength.
Definition : The area of cement particles of particular cement weight.
Apparatus :
IS sieve no.9 (90 microns)
Pan
Balance & Weights
Procedures :
Weigh correctly 100gms of cement (W1) gm.
Take sample on a IS 90 micron sieve
Brake down the air set lumps.
Sieve the sample giving circular and vertical motion continuously for 15 minutes.
Weigh the residue left on sieve (W2)
Calculation : Fineness of cement = (W2/W1) x 100
Observation Table :
Limit: As per IS 269 -1976 the residue by weight on IS test sieve no.9 is not exceed 10% for Ordinary Portland cement.
Frequency: For each batch received at site.
