TankFarms & Tank Foundations
Another beauty structure common in Oil & Gas Refineries we design is… Cylindrical storage tanks.
Tanks or tankages store either the raw material or final product in Oil & Gas refinery.
TankFarms is a collection of large number of storage tankages in an impervious containment basin which store a raw material , crude oil and petroleum products at the same site. They are called Oil Depots or Oil Terminals too.
The tank farms that store crude oil are many times located very close to the jetties where crude carriers get unloaded. These tank farms are connected to the jetties through pipelines which refill the storage tanks placed onshore. Crude oil is then transported to the refineries and further stored in the refinery storage tanks for processing. Similarly when the refined products are to be transported via ocean to other countries, the petroleum products are stored near the shore or near jetties in tank farms so that petroleum products can be loaded on the Vessels for transportation.

Such an interesting process !!

The civil design works will consist of huge tank foundations, pipe-cable tray supports, sleepers, cross overs, platforms, pump foundations, RCC, brick or earthen Dyke wall around containment , fire wall, sump, paving, drainage, valve chamber etc.
The storage tanks used in tank farms can be either External / Internal floating roof storage tanks or fixed roof storage tanks.
There are 5 to 6 types of tank foundations based on the types of soils. There is no IS code for the design of Cylindrical storage tank foundations & worldwide American design standards are used.

DATA / Inputs Required –
1. Mechanical Drawing complete with all necessary dimensions , bolt data & loadings ( various state weights- Shear-Moments, Base plate data)
2. Geotech Report , Topographic data.
3. Equipment Layout Drawings for Hortonsphere Tankfarm ( Location Co-ordinates & B.O.B.Elevation)
4. Civil Structural Design Basis , Grades

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY –
The foundation system will be designed for vertical compression , Tension , horizontal shear & over turning moment.

In chemical company chemicals are stored in such tanks and tank farms are constructed.
For chemical storage impervious floor and dyke walls are must.
The volume around tank dyke wall should be more then 1.1 volume of tank capacity.
The height of dyke wall should be H/2 ( H is height of storage tanks )
Pumps and operation of pumps are out side the dyke wall.
For design of foundation the as main load is transferred to base soil so if foundation height is not more then it does not required to have heavy foundation.
But holding down bolts are must to with stand sway of liquid during earth quack.
We need to check soil bearing capacity and total operating weight of tank for base foundation design.
For polymer tanks we provide sand bed at base of tank to accommodate expansion and contraction of base.
