10 things to become successful Civil Engineer
1.Knowledge of Civil engineering softwares like Autocad for drawing, Revit, E-Tabs, Stad Pro, Matlab, SAP, Quantity Takeoff, Planswift, BIM MS Project as per your area of interest. You must know 2-3 softwares out of these.
2.Information of various IS codes which will be useful in practice like IS 456, IS 800.
3.You must do internship in your holidays so as to have some site experience as well.
4.Always be in touch with your books & teachers.
5.Talk to professional people as much as you can, they will clear all your doubts and you will get fair idea about what you will be doing after graduation.
Most of the professionals will tell you that you dont need to be topper to work in civil engineering field. They are bit right but only for survival in the field. If you really wanted to be a successful civil engineer never take your studies for granted.
6.Do not take your helath and Site safety regulations for granted.
7.Keep your basic subject strong like Concrete, Drawing, Strength of Material, Surveying, Soil Mechanics, RCC.
8.Teach yourself and be expert in the handling of site/lab equipments as per your area of interest, All surveying equipment from Dumpy level to Total Station, Concrete testing equipment from Slump Cone to Universal Testing Machine (UTM) and many others for FM, hydrology, soil mechanics and list goes on.
9.Keep updated yourself from latest construction techniques, materials, equipments, research papers and upcoming research topics.
Have a good presentation skills.
10.Be ready to wake up at any time and go to work when needed.
