Water Absorption Test for bricks

Ref : IS 3495 (part II)

Purpose : To determine water absorption of bricks

Salient features:

  1. Balance - Capable of weighing 0.1% of mass of the sample
  2. Oven
Sample preparation:

Dry the sample in the oven at room temperature of 105 Degree Centigrade to 115 Degree Centigrade till it attains substantially constant mass

Cool the sample at room temperature and record its weight (M1)

Test Procedure:

  1. Immerse dried sample completely in clean water at a room temperature of 27oC ± 2oC for 24 hours
  2. Remove the sample from water and wipe out any traces of water with a damp cloth
  3. Weigh the sample up to 3 minutes and record its weight (M2)
Calculation:



% Water Absorption = ((M2 – M1) / M1) x 100
