Curing is important process in the construction of concrete structure. Curing is the important function for any building. This is to maintain the required moisture for the construction for safeguarding the building from the cracks. ... During this time water is poured on it.This is called curing of concrete.

During the process of strength gain of concrete i.e. - chemical reaction between cement and water, some heat is also generated in process.
Also the climatic condition such as winds, temperature, humidity etc, do make effects on the surface of the concrete.
Concrete is said to be impervious, meaning once set, the water can not penetrate into it.
During the hydration process, generated heat and surface conditions make concrete to loose the water present into it in the form of vapors, which causes cracking on the surface of concrete and the required amount of water for hydration process gets reduced.
Once the hydration process is stopped due to no presence of water inside of concrete, even if you put whole structure under water, it wont gain strength.
The hydration process is faster at early age and it keeps on going slowly in later days.
The first 10 to 15 days are very important from concrete point of view to ensure it gain strength due to chemical process.
To avoid the losses of water and stoppage of concrete strength gain process, concrete surface is protected.
Protection can be done by either keep pouring water continuously on surface of concrete, not removing concrete shutters for specified time, wrapping concrete surface with hessian cloth which keeps concrete surface remain wet. Chemically sealing the surface by using different types of curing compounds. and there are many ways to do protection and keeping process of strength gaining in concrete going on.
