These footing are provided where column distances are more.
These footing are provided where sbc of the soil is high.
Also it is easy to construct, and economical.
Interesting configuration - I can't say I've ever seen a column footing configured like this. I think Mehboobhas touched upon how/why/where these might be useful - Situations where spread footings are desired (no deep foundations, like piles or caissons...), columns are needed, and the bearing capacity of the in-situ soil is high enough to carry the load. Very interesting....
