What is the purpose of keeping cover blocks while concreting processes

Covers are provided to reinforcement for the following reasons :
  1. To protect the steel reinforcement from environmental effects so as to prevent corrosion
  2. To provide thermal insulation particularly during fire etc to protect the reinforcement bars.
  3. To give adequate embedding to the reinforcement bars so as to enable them to be stressed without slipping.
  4. A sufficient thickness of the concrete cover is required in order to slow down the carbonatation process towards the rebar.
  5. Large cover depths (50–75 mm) are required to protect reinforcement against corrosion in aggressive environments ( thick cover generally defeat the very purpose for which it was provided, so there is a need for judicious balance of cover depth and crack width requirements, a possible method could be placing a second layer of corrosion-resistant reinforcement like stainless steel rebars or meshes or FRP rebars in the concrete cover zone to reduce the cracking due to extra cover depth)

Dear Sir

Very well explained! Thanks for input.
