What will happen to a concrete if creep occurs?

Creep can be defined as the elastic and long-term deformation of concrete under a continuous load.

Generally, long term pressure changes the shape of the concrete structure and the deformation occurs along the direction of the applied load.

Consequences of Creep:
  1. Increased deflection on beams and slab.
  2. Increased deflection of long column leading to buckling.
  3. The gradual transfer of load from concrete to reinforcing steel in compression member.
  4. Loss of prestress in PSC.
