Why we do PCC before footings?

In any construction project, after excavation, PCC is done before footing.

Why we do PCC at the base of footing, PCC have lower strength than concrete and it is placed at base?

please understand one thing.the p.c.c.laid underneath the foundations known as lean concrete.thus of laid to cover the undulatiions while the excavation done.the lean concrete laid so that the structural foundation can be done on equal levelled surface which enable the load distribution equal .more over the p.c.c. laid underneath the foundation doesn't designed to transfer any loads.it is purely a levelling course.nothing else.hope I clarified your questiion

After doing excavation, the surface of earth is uneven, to make it level the PCC is done.

It helps you on following;

Avoiding contamination of rebars.

Avoid possibilities of concrete getting contaminates and further attacks on concrete.

It provide plane base for footing, it help to ensure uniform cover to rebars, uniform transferring of loads to base and avoid wastage of concrete.

PCC have less strength compare to any grade of concrete use for RCC, basic purpose of it is to provide the level base for footing.

Once the structure above PCC begins to get constructed, settlement at footing level starts as the loads on top gets increased.

The total settlement generally happens within a year or two.

There may be possibility that, base have voids and it is getting compressed or the PCC crumble down or sink into earth.

All structure experience the settlements and the design of footing (Size) made by considering the properties of base material.

A compaction of soil / fill need to be ensured correctly, in order to avoid a settlement / failure of structure.

A building collapsed at Pune during monsoon.
There was a water well inside that plot which was filled haphazardly. Due to water and voids in soil, building started to sink on one side and ultimately fall down.

Base is important for any structure, an Engineer should do work by taking utmost care at footing level.

it is for sure that designer doesn't take PCC for load consideration but for one thing, we should be clear that grade of PCC shall not be less than soil bearing capacity of designated area.
Now I have a question as most of site engineers get confused that top surface of PCC shall be finished or rough? (A general Question)

The purpose of lean concrete is to provide the uniform Surface to the footings concrete and to avoid the direct contact of footings concrete from soil.
And also to protect foundation from percolation of water, moisture or alkaline salt water may attack concrete and weaken the footings/foundations.

Hope you understand.

Pcc is used as a leveling course and as lining for rich concrete used in footing. If PCC Is not provided below footing, cement slurry will be absorbed from fresh concrete by soil, making the concrete previous.Porous concrete is weak, vulnerable to chemical attack and there is a possibility of corrosion of rebar provided at bottom of footing.
