Work Procedure for Honeycomb Repair

NOTE: As far as possible such defects shall be avoided by proper placing and compaction of concrete. In case of congested reinforcement proper alignment of bars shall be done in layers as per the direction of Engineer-In-charge.
SCOPE:
This procedure is applicable to repair of honey combs in RCC where there is rebar exposure or defect extends up to cover zone.

SAFETY GUIDELINES:
1) Proper safe platform shall be prepared while working at heights.
2) Wearing safety belts and helmets while working at heights.
3) Wearing safety goggles while chipping of loose concrete.
4) Polyalk EP should be handled carefully using hand gloves.
PURPOSE:
To strengthen the concrete, where said defects are observed.
MATERIALS AND TOOLS:
Polyalk EP Polymeric Mortar Modifier (PMM) of Sunanda Speciality Coatings Pvt.Ltd, Cement, Quartz’s sand, water, chipping tool, wire brush masons trowel, pan for mortar mixing, measuring jar, wooden stick.
SURFACE PREPARATION AND APPLICATION:
Chip off all loose concrete in and clean area thoroughly by wire brush. All loose particles, laitance, dust, shall be removed to obtain sound concrete surface.
Mix 5 parts cement and 15 parts of Quartz’s sand in dry condition to get uniform color. Add one part of Polyalk EP clean pan and mix thoroughly for 3 min. with a wooden stick. Add small quantity of water to attain dough like consistency mortar.
Material should be filled uniformly across the whole surface, with a mason’s trowel. All corners and cervices of the old concrete surface shall be properly filled with this mortar.
Proper compaction shall be ensured by tamping. The surface shall be properly finished.
CURING:
Patch up portion shall be protected from direct sunlight and rain by covering with Hessian cloth till it becomes stiff.
Curing shall be started after 12 hours by sprinkling water or covering with wet Hessian cloth and shall be continued up to 7 days.
