Checklist for all kinds of tiling works including grouting and silicon application
In tiling works there are many activities involved and application is done on floor and walls.
following checklist were attached at the end of this post.

There are many check points in attached checklist, briefing it below;

Tiling Work
Pre Execution Checks:

  • Are the latest GFC drawings available at site?
  • Cleaning and surface preparation for tiling has been completed.
  • Check the availability of clearance from CRM department to start the work.
  • Check the availability of clearance from Plumbing and Electrical department to proceed tiling works.
  • The tile name and tile code number to be used for that particular area of work is correct.
  • Are the required tools available for the work.
  • Is the quantity of tiles required to complete the work available.
During Execution Checks:
  • Are the tile laying pattern, specifications and tile grout color according to approved drawing?
  • Is the open life of spread adhesive exceeding the recommended limits?
  • Is the tile adhesive being used up within its pot life?
  • Is the freshly laid tiles are tapped gently, is there any settlement?
Post Execution Checks:
  • The name of tile mason and date of completion displayed on the finished tile surface.
  • Are the joints properly aligned?
  • Excessive adhesive / cement coming out of tile joints have been cleaned properly.
Screed for Floor Tiling Work
  • The surface on which screed to be laid made moist, free from dust and other contaminations.
  • Are there any undulations observed in surface level?
  • Button marks / height indicators fixed properly.
  • Side runners have been placed as per requirements.
  • Screeding is carried out in presence of Engineer.
  • The sequence of concreting well planned and sufficient labours deployed.
  • The screed for floor tiling done as per the slope and level requirements.
  • Checking of the level of finish for the tiles done when the screed is fresh, so as to make necessary corrections.
  • Uniform compaction with straight edge / flat shovel has been ensured.
Floor Tiling Work
Pre Execution Checks:

  • Are all the required tools available at site?
  • The surface on which tiles to be laid made moist, free from dust and other contaminations.
  • The plan / setting out for tiling done.
  • All the tiles are of required dimensions.
  • Chipped tiles not used for flooring.
  • Button marks established for tiling.
  • Tiles of different boxes of same batched mixed to ensure uniform tonality.
  • Required number of tiles available at the site.
  • Ceramic tiles cured before placing when fixing done using cement mortar.
  • Ceramic tiles cured before placing when fixing done using adhesive.
  • The tile code number and tile name ensure by the Tile in-charge.
During Execution Checks:
  • Is correct laying procedure followed (like leveling using rubber hammer and checking with spirit level etc).
  • Is the spacing of tile maintained using specified PVC spacer.
  • Cleaning of joints from loose mortar done immediately after tile laying.
  • Screed for floor tiling laid as per required slope and level (in wet areas).
  • The skirting provided is in line and level.
  • Slope of the tile is give as per the specifications (in wet areas).
  • The corners of the tiled surface are at right angle to each other.
  • The tiles have been disturbed before the tile adhesive has dried.
  • Tile adhesive removed from the surface of tile using a damp cloth while the tile adhesive is still wet.
  • Are the tiles are gently tapped after laying on the mortar bed for the better settlement.
Post Execution Checks:
  • Grouting done 24 hours after tiling.
  • Are the joints of tiles properly aligned?
  • The joints are cleaned to remove the loose mortar.
  • Any hollo sound heard while tapping the tiles.
  • The tiled surface properly aligned and provided with required slope.
  • Right angles ensured at the corners of tiled surface.
  • Barricading of the tiled area done.
  • All the floor tiles covered with LDPE sheets.
Dado Wall Tiling Work
Pre Execution Checks:

  • The surface on which tiles are to be laid is moist, free from dust and other contaminations.
  • The tile name and tile code number to be used for that particular area of work is correct.
  • Are all tiles according to required dimensions?
  • Are there any chipped tile being used for tiling?
  • Tiles of different boxes of same batch are mixed to ensure uniform tonality.
  • Ceramic tiles cured before placing when cement mortar is being used for tiling.
During Execution Checks:
  • Is correct laying procedure followed (like leveling using rubber hammer and checking with spirit level etc).
  • Is the spacing of tile maintained using specified PVC spacer.
  • Cleaning of joints from loose mortar done immediately after tile laying.
  • Are PVC beads in plumb and in line with wall tiles?
  • Is the PVC bead laid in a single piece and cut to 45 degree inclination at the joints?
  • The circular cutting in tile for the pipes have been properly done.
  • Is flexible tile adhesive used in case of under-tile waterproofing?
  • Is tile adhesive applied using appropriate notch trowel.
  • Are tiles being laid before adhesive starts to dry.
  • Wet tile adhesive cleaned off from the tile surface using damp cloth.
  • Checking of tiles by tapping gently done after laying on the mortar bed for settlement.
  • Tiles around the Bath Tub fixed in level, with gap for silicon filling and proper slope.
  • Skinwalls tiles properly – corner spacing ensured, tile beading and joining unpleasant right angles to the main wall ensured.
  • Tile adhesive applied to back of the tile to accommodate required levels.
Post Execution Checks:
  • Are the joints of the tiles properly aligned?
  • Hollow sound heard while tapping the tiles.
  • The tile surface properly aligned and in plumb.
  • Right angles at the corners of tiled surface ensured.
  • Barricading of tiled area suitably done.
  • Floor tiling covered with low quality POP.
  • The tile edges found to be straight.
  • Grouting of tiles completed with approved color of grout.
Grouting of Tiling Work
  • The grout code number and color ensured by tile in-charge.
  • Mortar pan and trowel cleaned & washed before starting grouting.
  • Tile joints have been thoroughly cleaned of dust and mortar before grouting.
  • Tiled surface clean and even before grouting.
  • Are the joint surface and grout color uniform.
  • The mix ratio is as per the specification for grout.
  • Is the grout mix thoroughly using mechanical stirrer?
  • Is the grout applied with rubber piece / wiper / rubber finishing board inside the joints?
  • The excess grout removed cleaned thoroughly in a circular motion with wet sponge.
  • After drying, the whole area cleaned with dry cloth and covered with plastic sheet.
  • Touchup work started only after grouting is finished.
  • The grout filling done properly with no protrusion from the tile surface.
  • The grouting on the wall–wall junction finished up to the corner.
Silicon Application for Tiling Work
  • The grouted joints cleaned of dust and mortar before silicon application.
  • Silicon filling done in the Kitchen and Bathroom.
  • The nozzle of silicon cartridge cut at 45 degree.
  • The grouted joints made dry before silicon application.
  • The surface is found clean and even before silicon application.
  • Availability of required tools.
  • Availability of required materials.
  • The masking tape removed immediately after finishing the tile joints before skin develops
  • Silicon joints smoothen with soap water and tool to get a perfect finish after removing of the masking tape.
