The Fundamental purpose of measuring the strength of concrete test specimens is to estimate the strength of concrete in the actual structure . For procedure Please refer IS 516,IS 456 and IS 10262 ,SP 24 . In these you will find technical aspects of strength developments and testing of concrete . You should read for acceptance criteria of concrete thoroughly .
This is very interesting subject in Concrete Technology . But ANSWER for your question must be understood few concepts by yourself . I can answer your questions in form of some Theoretical data available as per IS but it will be very easy form of knowledge . It must have some efforts from your side too . Here in respect of your question I will share the format for testing of concrete core and its parameters only for your academic interests .
I have tried to answer your question in as simple as it was raised by you . You are requested to go through as much data related to this topic and if you have still queries in your mind you can write us more .

According to thickness of structure, dia and depth of core is decided.

The sample is taken by drilling a core by core cutter machine into a structure.

Then sample is cut to required depth/ height by grinding the both ends and surface is made plain ( some times ceramic / cementitious adhesive use to level the both end - process is called as caping)

After this sample is cured for 2 days.

Then tested under compression testing machine.

Results of load are recorded and compressive strength is calculated.

As per the table, correction made by multiplying calculated strength with correction factor.

Do check IS code for complete detailing.
