USE OF GEO-TEXTILES IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

ABSTRACT
As of 2013 estimates ,the total road length in India 4,689,842 km (2,914,133mi) making the Indian road network, the second largest road network in the world after the united state. But the roads are not giving desired result due to poor CBR value.

Roads in India have mostly the problems like formation of potholes, ruts, cracks and localized depression and settlement especially during rainy season. These are mainly due to insufficient bearing capacity of the subgrade in water saturated condition. The subgrade soil mostly yields low CBR value 2-5%. In the CBR method of pavement design ( IRC37-2001 ) total thickness of pavement increases exponentially with decrease in the CBR value of subgrade soil which in turn increases the cost of construction. So it has been tried to use geotextile material for increasing the bearing capacity of subgrade. Laboratory and simulated field CBR tests are conducted on soil samples with and without inclusion of geotextile layer and also by varying the position of it in the mould. Use of geotextile increases the CBR value of the subgrade and thereby reduces the pavement thickness considerably up to 40%.

This study will have a positive impact on cost as it will reduce the maintenance cost of road. Our project will discuss in detail the process and its successful applications.

SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY AND ITS APPLICATION IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

ABSTRACT
Nowadays, a doubtful feeling is emerging among society regarding durability of civil structures. Modern techniques such as repairing of structural elements, prestressing, external post-tensioning, and developing kernel components for seismic devices like actuators, dampers, and isolators are accepted but still they are quite uneconomical. In order to make structures safer and stable we have come up with a material named Shape Memory Alloy.
Shape memory alloys are special materials with great potential in various civil engineering applications. There are many alloys, among which Ni-Ti alloy have ability to undergo large deformations up to 6 to 8 percent, and return to its undeformed shape (from austenite to martensite) through thermomechanical properties which includes superelasticity and shape memory effect. Until today, shape memory alloy have found very limited applications in civil engineering probably due to their cost and to limited knowledge of the material in the civil engineering industry. The paper includes the fundamental characteristic of shape memory alloy and some of its application in civil structures.
This paper will provide a momentum to the running wheels of construction industry and will nullify the threatening feeling regarding durability of structures. Our project will discuss in detail the process and its successful applications.

ARCHITECTURAL AND STRUCTURAL DESIGN FOR BLAST RESISTANT BUILDINGS

ABSTRACT

The increase in the number of terrorist attacks especially in the last few years has shown that the effect of blast loads on buildings is a serious matter that should be taken into consideration in the design process. Although these kinds of attacks are exceptional cases, man-made disasters; blast loads are in fact dynamic loads that need to be carefully calculated just like earthquake and wind loads.

The objective of this study is to shed light on blast resistant building design theories, the enhancement of building security against the effects of explosives in both architectural and structural design process and the design techniques that should be carried out. Firstly, explosives and explosion types have been explained briefly. In addition, the general aspects of explosion process have been presented to clarify the effects of explosives on buildings. To have a better understanding of explosives and characteristics of explosions will enable us to make blast resistant building design much more efficiently. Essential techniques for increasing the capacity of a building to provide protection against explosive effects is discussed both with an architectural and structural approach.

ADVANCEMENT IN UN-SIGNALIZED ROAD JUNCTION

ABSTRACT

Looking towards the present scenario, India has the second largest highway network in Asia. But it also corresponds to increase in number of accidents.. Moreover major accident cases occurs at roundabouts due to their complex nature and needs a higher safety concern and proper design. The roundabouts are the emerging type of intersection in Indian context. However India is now facing emergence of new cities as well as developing of existing cities which contribute to increase in demand for safe and efficient transportation system.

Here, we are presenting modified form of roundabout in much simpler and easier way. This provides continuous flow of traffic irrespective of traffic volume with zero waiting time. To minimize risk of accidents and delay in travel time, Advance Unsignalized Junction or Intersection is one of the solution we have come up with. It also accomplish the goal of providing safety to pedestrian along with traveller. It also prove to be eco-friendly as it causes less pollution since the emission produced by engine very less and also less noise produced as vehicle need not to stop at intersection.

This project will provide a momentum to the running wheels of the industry and will nullify the threatening feeling regarding highway safety. Our project will discuss in detail the process and its successful applications.

“SOLAR ROADWAYS”
– REBUILDING OUR INFRASTRUCTURE AND ECONOMY

ABSTRACT

Energy generation using solar photovoltaic requires large area. As cost of the land is growing day by day, there is a strong requirement to use the available land as efficiently as possible. Here, we explored the potential of energy generation using the land of national road highways by constructing a solar roadways. This space can contribute to the energy generation without extra cost for the land.

The Solar Roadway is a series of structurally-engineered solar panels that are driven upon. The idea is to replace all current petroleum-based asphalt roads, parking lots, and driveways with Solar Road Panels that collect energy to be used by our homes and businesses. The renewable energy generated by solar road panels will replace the current need for fossil fuel which is used for generation of electricity as also oil used for driving the vehicles which in turn reduces the greenhouse gases nearly to half.

The implementation of Solar Roadways Technology will create the clean energy boom, spurring private investment on a massive scale, with relatively little extra cost. An intelligent highway infrastructure and a self-healing decentralized power grid that will eliminate our need for fossil fuels. Solar Roadways will also features wildlife preservation, the elimination of impervious surfaces, law enforcement, DUI detection, counter-terrorism, etc. It provides a decentralized, secure, intelligent, self-healing power grid which pays for itself. So it’s time to upgrade our infrastructure (especially roads & power grids) with the 21st century technology i.e. “Solar Roadways”.

If our concept is implemented throughout India, it not only increases the power generation to more than a few giga watts of electricity but also has other various fringe benefits including longer road life, employment generation, reduced CO2 emission in environment, etc.

Our paper will discuss in detail the process and its successful applications.

USE OF PLASTIC WASTE IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

ABSTRACT
The population growth, industrialization, consumerism and technological development have led to uncontrollable accumulation of waste. Proper waste disposal is of great importance in both rural and urban areas.Bottles, containers and packing strips etc. is increasing day by day. As a result amount of waste plastic also increases. This leads to various environmental problems. Many of the wastes produced today will remain in the environment for many years leading to various environmental concerns. Therefore it is necessary to utilize the wastes effectively with technical development in each field. This article is based on the description of the suitability of plastic waste materials for road construction..

The waste is mixed in different proportions to the soil sample and their influences on geotechnical properties were studied. The paper indicated that the waste plastic, when added to hot aggregate will form a fine coat of plastic over the aggregate and such aggregate, when mixed with the binder is found to give higher strength, higher resistance to water and better performance over a period of time. Therefore, it is proposed that we may use waste plastic in the construction of Roads.

Our paper will discuss in detail the process and its successful applications.

PARKING DEMAND ASSESSMENT OF CBD AREA - A CASE STUDY OF SURAT CITY

ABSTRACT
The city core is the center of all major activities reflecting the culture of an urban center in the most comprehensive manner and mostly, has a unique functional significance. Such centers run on and through transportation nerves and several nodes. In walled cities, the space devoted to transportation has remained more or less the same over the years while the demand for such space has undergone a tremendous upswing. The increased in vehicle owning capacity and easily availability of vehicle loans has accelerated the total number of vehicles in India. Almost, all the metropolitan cities are experiencing increasing problems related to parking.

The study reveals that on-street parking has become of the major problem for the CBD area and if proper parking policies are not adopted then situation will become worst in near future.

Thus, attempt was done to find out the on-street parking demand at the busy urban road streets of Surat city in this study. A 03 hour survey using license plate method was carried out for the CBD area of Surat. Parking demand was found out in terms of parking load, parking accumulation, parking turnover, parking index.

If the final remedial measures are implemented, definitely it will lead in improving the present scenario for parking issues and traffic congestion.

ABSTRACT
Chimney or Stacks are tall and flexible structures made of steel, concrete, and masonry. These are used to discharge waste or poisonous gases at higher elevation so that it cannot contaminate surrounding atmosphere and also reaching the ground is within the permissible limits accepted by pollution control regular authority. Various loads like self-load, load of lining, wind load, earthquake load, temperature load act on the chimney. The present paper discusses the parametric study of self-supported chimney using MS Excel for various height, diameter, earthquake zones, wind zones and different type of soils. Parametric study on self-supported chimney from height 45 meters to 90 meters at an interval of 15 meters, for zone 2,hard soil and critical zone soft soil with wind varying 33 m/s to 55 m/s with an internal temperature of 200 degrees Celsius. This analysis is carried out using software MS excel. The results obtained in all cases are compared and finally maximum values obtained in seismic analysis and wind analysis are then compared for deciding the design values for steel chimney.

Authors:- Patel Vaibhav , Patel Udit , Patel Arpi , Patel Roshani , Yogeshkumar Patel
Soruce:- Proceedings of National Conference on Recent Advances in Civil Engineering (RACE2016), SVNIT, Surat, India.

ABSTRACT
Concrete is the most widely used construction material which has less tensile strength which is more sustainable to compressive force rather than tensile force. Concrete isa major component in the construction Industry as it is relatively cheap, easily available and convenient to cast. Cracks in concrete are inevitable and are one of the inherent weaknesses of concrete. These crack are mainly formed due to shrinkage, insufficient curing etc. Without immediate and proper treatment, cracks tend to expand further and eventually require costly repair. In this study, Bacillus Pasteurii, a common soil bacterium has been used to induce calcite precipitation. This technique is highly desirable because the mineral precipitation induced as a result of microbial activities bacteria. After adding of the bacteria we will check the strength results at 3 days, 7 days, 28 days, and, is pollution free and natural. After the completion of the process by the bacteria they produce limestone layer in the crack which help to protect against the different chemicals. Effectiveness of this technique has been evaluated by comparing strength of cracked specimens. The experiment about to study the strength characteristics of Concrete cubes after injection of 56 days.

RESPONSE OF CABLE STAYED BRIDGE UNDER CABLE LOSS
Authors:- Jani H.S. and Amin J.A.
Source:- Proceedings of National Conference on Recent Advances in Civil Engineering (RACE2016), SVNIT, Surat, India.

ABSTRACT
The failure of cable may be one of the accidental or eventually event, which must be considered during cable stayed bridge design. The effect of corrosion, fatigue and abrasion are the major factor of eventually cable failure. The present paper, is dealing with loss of cable due to corrosion. In the present study the effect of cable loss on the responses of cable stayed bridge having fan type layout is evaluated under static and dynamic loading. The analysis results show that cable loss leads to the redistribution of load to adjacent cable. The corrosion effect is significant when the cable loss is far to pylon as compared to loss of the cable near to pylon.

A STATE-OF-THE-ART PAPER OF STUDY ON COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS OF BLAST EFFECTS EXPLOITING TWO-WAY FLUID STRUCTURE INTERACTION

Authors:- Deepam Patel , Atul Desai and Mayank Desai
Source:- Proceedings of National Conference on Recent Advances in Civil Engineering (RACE2016), SVNIT, Surat, India.

ABSTRACT
It has been recognized that fluid structure interactions (FSI) between a blast wave and a free-standing structure reduces blast loads exerted on the structure. Understanding the FSI between a blast wave and a free-standing structure is a very important step in the development of devices for blast wave mitigation. In this dissertation, a structure subjected to a blast wave is treated as a rigid structure and the effects of deformation and stress-wave propagation within the structure are neglected. The basic concept of FSI is
that a blast wave impinging on a free-standing structure will cause the structure to recede. The receding motion of the structure relieves the pressure experienced by the structure and results in a decrease in the impulse transmitted to the structure. Meanwhile, the structure motion induces a shock wave behind the structure, which resists the structure motion. The resistance to the structure motion offsets a fraction of the decrease in pressure experienced by the structure, which is due to the receding motion of the structure. As a result, the impulse transferred to the structure increases, due to the induced shock wave. Both the receding motion of the structure and the resistance to the structure should be considered in the investigation of FSI between a blast wave and a free-standing structure.

Author:- Bipin Pal1 , Ashtaveer Mhashilkar2 , Anjali Pandey3 , Bhavesh Nagphase4 , Viren Chandanshive5
Source:- International Advanced Research Journal in Science, Engineering and Technology

Abstract: Cost estimating is one of the most important and challenging activities during project planning, which occurs at the early stages of a project life where limited information is available and many unknown factors affecting the project costs. ANN is a new advent that is used in cost estimation, which is able to lucubrate from experience and examples and deal with non-linear problems. It can perform tasks involving deficient data sets, fuzzy or insufficient information and for highly complex problems. The objective of this study is to review cost estimation models which used Artificial Neural Network (ANN) tool and to suggest the most effectual algorithm for cost prediction and the factors predominantly affecting the total construction costs of building projects. To build CEM, the most effective factors affecting cost in construction projects were identified based on a comprehensive survey among a collected sample of construction relevant model studies. The developed neural network model examines the data set into distinct cases classified on the basis of hidden layers. Each of them containing the independent input neurons, hidden layers and a dependent output neuron. The results of the trained models indicated that neural network reasonably succeeded in estimating the Total construction cost of building projects at the planning stage itself. The average error of test dataset for the adapted model was largely acceptable and can perform as a good indicator regarding the ability of the proposed model to predict the total construction cost of any future construction project at an appreciated degree of accuracy. This paper gives a clear review of implementing the ANN tool in prediction of total cost of building construction projects and the relevant factors affecting it. Keywords: Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Cost Estimation Model (CEM), effective algorithm, prediction.
