Form Finish Repair for Concrete - Cement Wash useful in Industrial Structures Only

The simplest form of applied finish is a wash of cement grout. These washes are not permanent but tend to flake( dust off) and discolor with age. So, these finishes are not recommended where architectural appearance is a feature. However, they may be used on buildings and structures of the industrial type.

The procedure for cement wash finish is as follows:

a) Prepare the cement –grout form ordinary grey cement ( or a mixture of grey and white cement) mixed with water to form a slurry composed of about 1.4 kg of cement to each liter of water.

b) After attending to the surface treatments like removal of fins, filling tie-rod holes, patching up of honeycombs and other defects, thoroughly wet the surface to be coated.

c) Apply a thin coat of the grout by brushing evenly and uniformly over the surface. After the first coat has dried, apply a second coat in a similar way.

d) When a brushed finish is not desired and a smoother finish is preferred, rub the cement washed surface with a carborundum stone.

e) Cure the “washed” surface by gentle sprinkling water two to three times a day for three days.
