In general pillars are free standing structures.
Column is a structural definition of vertical member which transfer the load.
Pillars in Construction are mainly termed by architect for wall box or column which goes through the height along periphery of building.
Though they are not free standing as they are anchored at floors to avoid slenderness and avoiding failures.
Pillar is also termed when column have architectural features on it.
Basically there is not much difference in them.
