While breaking bricks why do we need to add soil?

Brick has a depression / frog on top of it.

We calculate strength as load / Area.

If you apply load without feeling that frog, the load transfer is done by area which is in contact with plate.

If the area get reduced, it will take load according to that contact area, when you do calculation of the strength, you will take complete area (size of brick).

Then your equation of Load upon area will show low strength.

So to ensure loads are transferred by each square mm till bottom, you need to ensure frog is filled and the frog area is too transferring load below.
